Brief

This project is all about a deeper exploration into gestalt’s principle,  where we focus on creating imagery through positive and negative space.

Using this method, we need to create 3x A2 posters for movies from specific categories that were provided (Animation, Award winning and based on a book)

Through this way we learn how to create meanings in illustrations through a concise manner.

I have chosen the following movies to create posters of:
- Moonlight
- Kubo and the Two Strings
- American Psycho
Poster 1 - Moonlight
This movie follows the story of a child and eventual grown adult who struggles in finding his identity and sexuality as he is bullied by others for being homosexual.
We see the struggles of the withdrawn and shy protagonist, Chrion, living in a household without a father and living with his mother who takes priority in her drug addiction over taking care of him.
I created an outline of his mother’s face who yelled at him in the movie to shape Chrion’s hairline.

The hand outline is the hand of the boy that Chiron had first
kissed while on the beach

Because it was on the beach, I had the waves of the sea
shading Chiron’s neck

Poster 2 - Kubo and the Two Strings
Set in Japan, this is a stop motion animation film following the story of a boy named Kubo who throughout the film needs to find specific items that will help him fight against an evil spirit.
I used the wings of the twin sisters to shape the hair of Kubo.
The way that the wings cut off the circle in the background is a subtle way to shape the moon, which is an important aspect of the movie.

I used the horns of the beetle to shape Kubo’s nose

I used the unbreakable sword to add highlights to the wings for more detail
Poster 3 - American Psycho
I had used a high heel to shape his nose (due to his liking towards women in high heels), and a gun to shape his one eye. I had applied a paper texture to the whole poster to match the texture of the business card in the movie.

I had illustrated a bloody knife to shape a tie (and the
knife emerging from a slit throat) and used chainsaws as
suspenders as this is part of his outfit
